Contained in this collection are agricultural publications (ca. 1920 - ca. 1960); pamphlets, brochures, and flyers for agricultural equipment and other agricultural information (ca. 1920 - ca. 1960); and correspondence, other papers, and memorabilia of David C. and Edgar W. Worth (1916 - 1990). This collection formerly contained publications, brochures, etc. produced by NC State College/University (1920s – 1980s) but these have been moved to the University Archives. Brothers David Crenshaw and Edgar Wilson Worth graduated from North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later NC State University), the former with a B.S. in Agriculture (1927) and M.S. in Animal Husbandry (1930) and the latter with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. The Jesse P. Spoon Letters are ten letters documenting Spoon's life as a student at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University). The letters are addressed to Robert A. Coble of Oakdale, North Carolina, who was Spoon's classmate at what Spoon calls "Oakdale School." This may refer to Oakdale Academy, which was a preparatory school in Alamance County. Spoon discusses military training, classes, and social receptions at the college, as well as other notable events like measles outbreaks. There is also some discussion of events in Oakdale, a community in the Patterson Township of Alamance County, North Carolina. The first seven letters were written from January to April 1903, with the following three being from March and May of 1904. Jesse Page Spoon was born on 20 January 1883 in Alamance County, North Carolina. He may have attended preparatory school at Oakdale Academy. In 1902 or 1903, he began attending North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now North Carolina State University), where he earned a Bachelors of Agriculture in May 1908 and a Master of Science in 1909. In 1909 he worked at the college as a laboratory assistant in anatomy and physiology. He next attended the Kansas City Veterinary College in Kansas City, Missouri, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Surgery degree in 1911. He practiced veterinary medicine in Burlington, North Carolina, where he worked with Dr. W.A. Hornaday and served on the Burlington School Board and as Secretary of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association. He married Mable Clare Lea on 30 December 1915. The Mary R. Boone Papers contain newspaper clippings, photographs, photocopies of newspaper clippings, articles, and cartoons relating to the proposed ratification of the Equal Rights amendment and Mary R. Barnes Boone's participation in a hunger strike in support of ratification. While the material is primarily focused on the hunger strike, documents relating to Boone's experiences as a feminist and supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment are also contained in the collection, including her correspondence with the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints regarding her views. An audioreel of Sonia Johnson's speech at North Carolina State University, and January 1983 edition of Life Magazine: The Year in Pictures are included in this collection, along with various ephemera related to the aforementioned topics. Mary R. Boone was a student at North Carolina State University in 1982, and she belonged to a group that brought Sonia Johnson to campus to speak. Johnson had just authored the book titled From Housewife to Heretic, an account of Johnson's personal journey as a previous member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a supporter of the Equal Rights Ammendment. Johnson's speech inspired Boone (then known as Mary Barnes) to join with six other women in a hunger strike to support the Equal Rights Amendment, then being considered by the states for ratification. Though the Equal Rights Ammendment failed to pass, the hunger strike generated much publicity and interest, even inciting sympathy fasts among supporters of the protest group. Less
