The Ed Caram Negatives contain photographic negatives taken by Caram during his time as a student at NC State, from approximately 1969 to 1975. Topics photographed include athletics (particularly basketball and football), campus buildings, political rallies, student protests, outdoor events, concerts, daily student life, speakers, and the State Fair, among others. Negatives in Cardbox 13 and Microfilm Boxes 16 and 17 may have been taken by Nick England, another student photographer for the Technician.
Ed Caram was a photographer for Student Media, with many photos appearing in the Technician student newspaper and perhaps the Agromeck yearbook as well. He was a student at NC State from about 1969 to 1975.
During his time in the Air Force, Ed Caram developed his photography and research skills by studying maps and classified documents. After his time in Vietnam, he used the G.I. Bill to attend NC State from about 1969 to 1975 where he became a photographer for the Technician student newspaper. His images illustrate the history of the university at that time including dramatic athletic victories, student protests, local politicians, and students engaging in leisure activities.
Later in life, Caram published several books on the history of North Carolina including two on German U-boat wrecks, a topic of particular interest to him. He collected numerous historical photographs of U-boat 576 that he assembled in one of his books, along with declassifed documents about its sinking. He was a local reporter after moving to Jacksonville, NC, where he frequently provided news outlets with tips, information, and photographs.
Ed Caram died in 2013 at the age of 66.
The Ed Caram Negatives contain photographic negatives (black-and-white 35 mm) taken by Caram during his time as a student at NC State, from approximately 1969 to 1975. The first series, Athletics, contains many shots of Wolfpack football as they made frequent bowl appearances, including two in the Peach Bowl. Also included are negatives of basketball including the 1974 NCAA Championship and featuring players such as Monte Towe, Tommy Burleson, and David Thompson. Buildings and landmarks such as the Brickyard, Harrelson Hall, dormitories, and aerial shots comprise the Campus Buildings and Grounds series. The People series highlights student protests, political rallies, events, and students at leisure. Finally, the Non-NC State series contains images off campus such as the State Fair, beach scenes, farms and animals, and tobacco harvesting, from Caram's travels. Negatives in Cardbox 13 and Microfilm Boxes 16 and 17 may have been taken by Nick England, another student photographer for the Technician.
Most items are dated to circa 1969 - circa 1975 because that is when Caram attended NC State. However a more specific date was given when the event could be identified, basketball players identified, or in some cases the negatives were labelled with a specific year.
The Ed Caram Negatives are arranged into four series: Athletics, Campus Buildings and Grounds, People, and Non-NC State. Materials are arranged alphabetically within each series.

The collection is organized into four principal series:
The Athletics Series contains three subseries: Football, Basketball, and Other Sports.
The Football Subseries illustrates Wolfpack football at a time when they made multiple bowl appearances, including the Peach Bowl (twice), the Liberty Bowl, and the Bluebonnet Bowl. The Peach Bowl played against West Virginia in 1972 is well-represented in this subseries. A majority of the images depict action shots of games although practices, player portraits, spectators, and on-field ceremonies are also covered.

The Basketball Subseries contains images of Wolfpack basketball as they won ACC titles and achieved their first NCAA Tournament Championship in 1974. Coach Norm Sloan as well as players such as Monte Towe, Tommy Burleson, David Thompson, and Tim Stoddard are featured prominently in the negatives. The championship game versus Marquette is included. Most are action shots from games, but there are also some casual shots of players.

The People Series is comprised of images of NC State students attending events, enjoying leisure time, walking to class on campus, and playing games, among other topics. For images of people not on campus, consult the Non-NC State series. Topics represented include student protests, especially against the Vietnam War (including the “Capitol March” held on April 21, 1972). Others are political rallies, rallies against the death penalty, and the Tuscarora Indian protest. There are images of students attending outdoor events such as Campus Chest, concerts, and speaking events. There are also a large number of negatives showing students in various leisure or recreation activities, such as playing football, playing volleyball, swimming, reading, talking, or simply relaxing outside.

The Non-NC State series features images that cannot be identified as taking place on the campus of NC State. It includes images of the State Fair, people at the beach, farms and farm animals, zoo animals, children playing, and local politicians. Some of the politicians are Pat Taylor (gubernatorial candidate), Senator B. Everett Jordan, Skipper Bowles, and a large number of images of Senator Jesse Helms at various events.
