Broadening the Impacts of Your Research

Category: Research

Tags: broader impacts; science communication; faculty; postdocs; gradu

Being able to engage diverse communities with your research and communicate scientific discoveries outside of academia is an increasingly critical skill. The National Science Foundation in particular has rigorous expectations around public engagement and communication for the research it funds. Proposals are evaluated based on two criteria - intellectual merit and the potential to advance desired societal outcomes. This second criteria is addressed by the broader impacts statement of the proposal, where the inclusivity, engagement, and communication of the research is addressed.

This workshop will discuss broader impacts statement best practices and pitfalls, resources and partners on campus, and include a hands-on examination of funded broader impact statements.
