Teaching Visualization Literacy Crash Course

Category: Data and Visualization

Tags: data visualization

Visualization design has increasingly become an important skill for students to master in order to communicate information clearly, both to be successful in their academic careers as well as in the workforce. While students often have to create graphs for reports and presentations, they are rarely taught visualization literacy skills.

This two-part workshop is designed to help faculty and instructors improve student success through increasing the data visualization literacy of students. The goal of the workshop is to provide training and resources to instructors to be able to teach students how to create well-designed visualizations in order to communicate research findings clearly and effectively.

Part I of the workshop will cover best-practices in visualization, effective visualization design, pedagogical considerations, and evaluation methods for helping students become better communicators using data visualization.  Part II will cover how to use Tableau in the classroom. Attendees are welcome to come to one or both parts.

The schedule of the workshop is as follows:

Part I: Teaching Visualization Literacy: 10:00am-12:00pm
This part of the workshop will cover best-practices in visualization, effective visualization design, pedagogical considerations, and evaluation methods for developing visualization literacy.

Lunch on your own: 12-1:30pm

Part II: Teaching Visualization with Tableau: 1:30pm-3:30pm
