Getting Started With Python

Category: Digital Media

Tags: None

In this short workshop Brittany Johnson will teach you the basics of programming in Python. You'll quickly learn the language's basic coding constructs, like conditionals and scripting, and then put your new knowledge to work to automate simple tasks, like reading and writing files.  This workshop will give you the knowledge and resources to automate everyday computing tasks, and give you a good foundation for developing projects with the Raspberry Pi

This workshop draws inspiration from the book “Automate the Boring Stuff with Python: Practical Programming for Total Beginners." Come join us to learn how to make the boring fun (and easy) again!

Brittany Johnson is a 5th year Ph.D. student at NC State University under Dr. Emerson Murphy-Hill, and co-advised by Dr. Sarah Heckman, in the Developer Liberation Front. She received her Bachelor's of Arts in Computer Science from College of Charleston in 2007. She conducted her undergrad research under Dr. Jim Bowring in CIRDLES. Her research interests are in human factors in software engineering and artificial intelligence; her current research is focused on modeling developer conceptual knowledge. She was recently awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to support her research and more recently interned as Microsoft Research under Thomas Zimmermann. More on Brittany can be found at http://www4.ncsu.edu/~bijohnso.
