Dr. Marsha Gordon’s new book, Film is Like a Battleground: Sam Fuller's War Movies, is the first to focus on the genre that best defined the American director's career: the war film. In this program, Dr. Gordon will introduce Fuller’s 1951 film The Steel Helmet and after the screening will lead a discussion about the film and Fuller’s work. The Steel Helmet’s depiction of Korean War soldiers dealing with moral and racial identity crises remains one of the director’s most gripping, realistic depictions of the blood and guts of war, and was so controversial that Fuller became the target of an FBI investigation. (Runtime 85 minutes)
Dr. Marsha Gordon is an associate professor of Film Studies at NC State and her book will be available on site for purchase and signing from the NC State Bookstores.
