Beall's photo of a policeman speaking with a small boy during a parade was the most-applauded picture ever to appear in the Washington Daily News. He started his career at the age of sixteen, working for a photo agency. He later worked as a photographer for the Washington Post and then the Washington Daily News. He was named chief photographer in 1940. Beall worked as a combat photographer with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He won the Air Medal in 1945 for his coverage of the battle for Okinawa. His credits include awards from the National Headliners Club, the United Press International News Pictures Contest, and the National Press Photographers Association.
