Walking Tour of D. H. Library
NOTE: The information for some locations on this Walking Tour may change due to the current D. H. Hill Library Renovation project. Please see the Library Renovation website, Relocation News or contact us for latest information.
D. H. HILL LIBRARY - THE FIRST FLOOR
Welcome to D. H. Hill Library, the largest
library at North Carolina State University. There are also four branch
libraries, the Burlington Textiles Library, the Harrye B. Lyons Design
Library, the Natural Resources Library, and the Veterinary Medical
Library, and 2 affiliated collections, the African American Cultural
Center Reading Room and the College of Education Media Center.
This walking tour guides you to the most prominent locations in D. H.
Hill Library, and Library staff are happy to answer questions. Please
allow 20-25 minutes to complete this tour.
Just inside the entrance of D. H. Hill Library,
you will find the Express Circulation Desk (#1). Express
Desk staff can check out books, give you directions within the library,
teach you how to use the self-check machine to check out library materials,
and call a campus escort for you after dark.
To the east of the Express Circulation Desk is
the Ground Floor Reading Room (#2). The Reading Room is one of the most popular
study spaces on campus, from early morning to late in the evening. With comfortable seating, ample
table space, plenty of natural light, computer stations, wireless network
access, and close proximity to the Hill of Beans Coffee Bar, the Reading
Room is an ideal spot to meet classmates for study
sessions.
To the west of the Express Circulation Desk is
the Hill of Beans Coffee Bar (#3). The Hill of Beans is a great place to meet friends or take a study
break. The menu includes
regular and specialty coffees and lattes, tea, fruit and fruit juice,
bagels, muffins, and biscotti.
DIRECTIONS
Proceed to the first floor. Take the main staircase to the
lobby. Alternate route: Use the elevator located off the Reading Room. Once off the
elevator, follow the walkway to the right until you reach the lobby.
In the lobby, you will find a wooden case that
contains a large, lighted building map. Frequently, interesting exhibits
created by the Special Collections Research Center are featured in the
lobby on the mezzanine.
The main Circulation Desk (#4) is located in the lobby.
Circulation Desk staff will help you borrow, renew, or recall library
materials. They can initiate searches for books you can't find in the
bookstacks. Books may be returned in book drops located at the Circulation
Desk, the building entrance, and outside the building. Lost and found
items are held here.
As you face the Circulation Desk, Photocopy Services (#5)
is on your left. In Photocopy Services, you can purchase a Wolfcopy
card for photocopies. You can also purchase pencils,
pens, blank CDs, and USB flash drives from the vending
machine, or use the ATM.
DIRECTIONS
Descend the short flight of stairs or elevator to the left of Photocopy
Services to the first floor of the West, or Erdahl-Cloyd, Wing.
To your right is the largest bank of photocopiers in
D. H. Hill Library. You may use a WolfCopy card or coins at these
machines. There are also photocopiers on each floor (2-9) of the Tower
or Bookstacks section of the library. Just past the copiers is the Reference
Desk (#6).
Librarians at the Reference Desk can help you find information and
assist with your research and assignments, come to the desk in person,
or get help via phone (515-2935) or online at the Ask a Librarian web
page (http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/libref).
Librarians can also help you use the computers near the Reference
Desk to find books, articles, and useful web sites. Please introduce
yourself to the librarian at the desk and ask any questions you have
about the Libraries or your research needs.
To your left, the Current Periodicals (#7) section begins. It extends the length of the wing with journals and magazines on
the left and newspapers at the end on the right. Current Periodicals contains the
most current issues of print periodicals and newspapers, arranged in call
number order. Some popular
newspapers like the News and Observer, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal
are kept at the Reserve Desk; just ask there for the issue you
need.
Just beyond the copiers and next to Current Periodicals is the Reserve
Desk (#8). Reserve Desk staff can help you identify and locate
materials your instructors assign for specific courses. These materials
include readings, notes, and syllabi and may be in print or electronic
form. Print materials may be checked out for short periods of time.
Electronic reserves can be accessed via the web. Laptop computers can
be checked out at the Reserve Desk for use in D. H. Hill Library. The
Reserve Desk staff can also help you locate periodicals and newspapers
and use library photocopiers and printers.
DIRECTIONS
Walk past the photocopiers, Reference Desk, Reserve Desk, and newspaper
shelving. Go up the wide staircase. At the top of the stairs, go through the
double doors and turn right. The Media/Microforms Center will be in front of
you. (Alternate route: Walk past the copiers and Reserve Desk. Turn right at
the newspaper shelving. Turn right again as you approach the windows and take
the elevator to the 2nd floor. Turn left off the elevator. The Media/Microforms
Center will be on your right.)
D. H. HILL LIBRARY - THE SECOND FLOOR
In the Media/Microforms Center (#9), you can view videocassettes and
DVDs, listen to CDs, and find other audiovisual materials. Often these
materials are included in course assignments. Videotapes of most televised
courses are also available.
The Media/Microforms Center contains library
materials in "microformats" including newspapers, technical reports,
standards, statistics, NCSU dissertations, government documents, and
patents. The Media/Microforms Center staff can show you how to use the
special viewing equipment, copiers, and printers required for microfiche,
microfilm, and microprint.
D. H. Hill Library houses 2 theaters (#10). The Erdahl-Cloyd
Theater entrance is directly opposite the entrance to the Media/Microforms
Center. The Mini-Theater entrance is further down the long hallway on the right.
Instructors often schedule class viewings of films in these theaters. The Erdahl-Cloyd
Theater seats 150 and the Mini-Theater seats 45.
DIRECTIONS
Retrace your steps to the first floor, walk back past Reserves and
Reference and up the stairs to the Tower Lobby. Cross the lobby, turn to the
right, and walk around the mezzanine to the Tower elevators and stairs. Take
the elevator or stairs to the second floor. Turn left and walk along the government
documents collection, then turn to the left at the end of the shelves, following
signs into the East Wing. Follow signs to the Digital Media Lab.
Each ITTC Lab (#14) contains 15 student computer stations
for hands-on instruction in research skills and the latest software,
hardware, and communication technologies. These labs are used by classes
participating in library instruction workshops.
Digital Media Lab (#13) staff can help you create and
convert all types of media to digital formats. The Digital Media Lab
includes scanners that convert documents, slides, photographs, and microforms
to digital format. The Digital Media Lab also provides the means to create
digital video clips and convert analog video to digital video.
DIRECTIONS
Retrace your steps back into the tower. Once you reach the Tower
section, follow the purple carpeting to the right, past study carrels, stairs,
and elevators on your right to the Unity Lab.
You may use your Unity/Eos account to access computers in the Unity Lab (#15). Unlike the computers in the Reference Area of the library that are used primarily for research, Unity Lab computers offer Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PhotoShop, and math and statistics software such as MATLAB, Maple, and SAS. The Unity Lab is the only place in the library where you may use print quota to pay for printing.
DIRECTIONS
Return to the Tower stairs and elevators (on the other side of a study room with glass walls). Take one to the 9th floor.
The 9th floor is a typical bookstacks floor and looks much like floors 3-8, except for housing the folio collection of our oversized books (and offering the best views of the NCSU campus!). All other books and journals are arranged on floors 3-9 in Library of Congress (LC) call number order beginning with "A" call numbers on the 3rd floor and ending with "Z" call numbers the 9th floor. During renovations, part of the reference collection is located on the 6th floor.
DIRECTIONS
Return to the same elevators or stairs. Take one back to the Ground Floor Reading Room (Level G). (Please note: if you have walked through the North Bookstacks area, you may have noticed another set of elevators. The North Elevators do not provide access to the Ground floor.)
We hope that this tour has familiarized you with D. H. Hill Library!
We invite you to return to the Reference Desk for answers to your remaining questions.
