Morrill Act, 1862

1862: The Morrill Act became law on July 2, 1862. The legislation provided funding to establish a land-grant college in each state. In North Carolina, the money first went to the University of North Carolina, but in 1887 the state legislature established North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now NCSU) as the state’s land-grant institution. Jerry Alexander and corn yield, 1914

1914: Jerry Alexander, of a Buncombe County corn club, won first prize in 1914 for his yield of 158 bushels and 54 pounds. Corn clubs were precursors to 4-H, and the first one in North Carolina was established in July 1909. 4-H celebrates its 100th anniversary during 2009. More NC 4-H history.
Wallace Carl Riddick

1916: Wallace Carl Riddick became president of North Carolina State College in July 1916, and he served in that position in 1923. Instead of retiring, he then became the first dean of the College of Engineering. Here Riddick is shown with surveying equipment in a 1940 photograph. More information about President Riddick.

1938: Textiles equipment in Tompkins Hall, July 1938. These draper and jacquard looms were in the School of Textiles weave room.
4-H king and queens of health, 1940

1940: District kings and queens of health at the 4-H Short Course, July 1940. NCSU has traditionally hosted youth groups on campus during the summers. The 4-H Short Courses, State Club Weeks, and State Congresses have been held on campus since the 1920s. 4-H celebrates its 100th anniversary during 2009. More NC 4-H history.
U.S.S. Tyrrell launched, 1944

1944: State 4-H Club Leader L. R. Harrill and others watched as the U.S.S. Tyrrell was launched from Wilmington on July 10, 1944. North Carolina 4-H helped fund and name two warships during World War II. 4-H celebrates its 100th anniversary during 2009. More NC 4-H history.
