Alexander Q. Holladay

1889: On August 30, 1889, the Board of Trustees elected Alexander Q. Holladay as the first president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later named NCSU). The move surprised Holladay because he had applied to be only a professor of English, but he accepted the position anyway. Painting by Clawson Shakespeare Hammitt.

Swine demonstration, 1919

1919: Swine Extension agents set up a demonstration in front of the old Pullen Hall during the Farmers’ Convention, August 27-29, 1919.
Trailwood city of trailers 1946

1946: Many married veterans of World War II attended NC State on the GI Bill. One place they and their families lived was Trailwood, the "City of Trailers." In August 1946, more than 75 trailers comprised the City, with the central bath house and laundry visible at the far right. By 1949, Trailwood had been relocated, and Williams Hall was built in its place.

Vetville 1947


1947: Vetville, August 7, 1947. Vetville was another enterprise to house married veterans attending NC State after World War II. Later, Korean War veterans lived there. At the end of the 1950s Bragaw dormitory was built on the site.

1967: Dr. William E. Splinter, of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, with tobacco harvesting equipment that he helped develop, August 1967. Throughout the history of North Carolina State University, research and development conducted by its faculty and students has assisted North Carolina farmers.

The team’s record that season was 8 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie, and it went on to win the Peach Bowl.
