Department Background
1881: Poultry research began at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station
1889: North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station was transferred to the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (North Carolina State University) when the college was established, but did not relocate to the college at that time
1895: Poultry Division added to the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station
1897: North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station moved to the grounds of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts
1900: First poultry courses taught at the college
1912: Poultry classes became part of the curriculum in the Department of Animal Industry
1922: School of Agriculture established
1923: Poultry Department became one of six departments in the School of Agriculture
1962: Poultry Department renamed the Department of Poultry Science
