Chancellors & Presidents at NC State

Holladay Hall houses the NCSU administration. The building was named after the university's first chief executive.

The chief executive of NCSU was originally titled "President" (1889-1934). It then became "Vice President of the Consolidated University" (1934), then "Dean of Administration" (1934-1945), and finally "Chancellor" (1945-present).

About this Site

This history of NCSU presidents and chancellors was originally created as an online exhibit in 1998 and titled "109 Years of Leadership." It traces the tradition back to 1889, when Alexander Quarles Holladay was selected to lead the new North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now NCSU). This online exhibit has now been updated and added to the Historical State website, and it contains information on the chancellers who have served since 1998 as well as the earlier ones.
