Using the ERIC Thesaurus

Every resource listed in ERIC has been assigned descriptors, words that describe the journal article or ERIC document's content. These descriptors are subjects in education, psychology, and other related fields. They are chosen from a large list of specific terms by people working for ERIC. The descriptors are treated as hyperlinks so you can follow from one record to others on a topic. Descriptors look like this in an ERIC record:

Descriptors Example

Descriptors help you find an article on a topic even if it would be hard to do so based on the words in the title or abstract.

These descriptors are presented in the ERIC Thesaurus. Use the Thesaurus to find good keywords for your topic. Sometimes the Thesaurus reveals search terms you didn't originally think of when starting your search - for example, adolescent instead of youth or teenager. Finding these additional terms increases the comprehensiveness of your search.
