Textiles Library: Textile Statistics Resource Guide
Introduction
Textiles industry research often involves the study and
analysis of present companies, products, and services, including comparison,
combination, and analysis of economic statistical data. Much of this data can
be rare and expensive, and therefore, difficult to find. This resource guide
is intended to assist College of Textiles students and faculty in gathering
primary statistical, economic, and other industry data, which will support
their longer term research goals. Textiles data sources provide information
on production, consumption, import
& export, pricing, and much more, by fiber type or product, as well as
geographic location. Business information covers in-depth company, industry,
and market data. Many other resources are also available to assist in finding
economic data relevant to the textile and apprel industry.
All of the resources in the guide can be found in the Textiles
Library or, in the case of electronic resources, accessed off-campus.
Some databases or ebooks may only be accessible by NCSU students, facutly,
and staff. However, all resources can be accessed from any NCSU library.
The
following resources are those with significant comprehensive and reliable
coverage.
Textile Outlook International
This journal publication is an analysis of worldwide trends in textile
trade, manufacturing, marketing and markets including "upstream
activities" (fibers & yarns),
and "downstream activities" (end uses, apparel, and
distribution.) The publication includes a lot of statistical
data in the form of tables, charts, and graphs, with some in
color. Information gathered is cited as being retrieved from
credible sources. Thorough analyses of the information provide
industrial prospects, trends, and corporate profiles. And each
issue includes a glossary and index, including article titles
since the beginning of publication in 1985.

Textile Manufacturers Federation Country Statements
The ITMF Country Statements published by the International Textile Manufacturers
Federation provides summaries of the textiles economies of participating members.
After a textual summary discussing economy, activity, and outlook for the global
textile industry, a more detailed account is provided for each country, including
data illustrating industry structure, trade, and economic problems. Statistics
tables provide more data on General Economy, Basic Structure, Activity Level,
and Imports & Exports.

Fiber
Organon
Fiber Organon is a monthly statistical review of global manufactured
fiber information, presenting the latest data on industry trends in production,
shipments, capacities, stocks, imports and exports, and consumption. Two
issues in particular are important industry planning tools: The Worldwide
Manufactured Fiber Survey, featured in the June issue every year, contains
demand, production, capacity, consumption, and utilization data by fiber
type and country or region; and the End Use Survey, published in the October
issue, measures the amount of raw materials were necessary to produce end
use items, such as apparel, floor coverings, and furniture. A brief explanation
of data collection methods and/or summary of the data are provided. The comprehensiveness
and currency of the data included, as well as the reputation of the publisher,
the Fiber Economics Bureau, makes the journal one of the most important resources
in fiber economics.

Thomson's financial database includes information on companies, industries, and
markets worldwide. Content is very comprehensive, and information is arranged
and formatted for the convenience of advanced business and political professionals.

Plunkett Research Online
Plunkett Research includes a research center specifically for the
apparel and textile industry. The center includes a significant section of
industry statistics, as well as information on market research, company profiles,
exports, and textile and apparel associations. A glossary is even included
to describe industry terms and acronyms.
