Getting help
- For immediate assistance: Ask a Librarian
- For specialized assistance: Feel free to contact me directly by e-mail, phone, or IM (AIM screen name jkwncsu) for questions about finding information in the physical or mathematical sciences.
- For walk-in help, my typical reference desk hours at the DH Hill Library (Fall 2008):
- I'm happy to meet with you at other times by appointment. Contact me to set up a time.
Ways I can help (or: What do reference librarians do, anyway?)
I can:
- Introduce you to new information technologies: RSS, wikis, blogs, search engines, databases, citation managers (e.g., RefWorks), etc. Feel free to ask if you have a question about something not listed here.
- Provide instruction on using research databases in the physical sciences. I can meet with you individually or instructors can request a class visit. I can help you:
- Know what database to use for your research
- Learn complex science databases like Web of Science, SciFinder Scholar, or Beilstein/Gmelin
- Discover advanced features to make your work easier
- Help you find information. Common science research questions I can assist with:
- "I need papers about high performance liquid chromatography. Where do I look?"
- "While reading a paper I was given a reference to another paper, but I don't understand the citation. Where do I find this?"
- "I need to find the refractive index of a chemical. How can I find data like this?"
- Your question here?
