A native of Kannapolis, Robert Misenheimer has served as both teacher and principal in area schools before taking up a career as a public servant. He was elected to the city council for the first time in 1989; he then served five successive terms there before winning election as Kannapolis's mayor in 2004. As Mayor, he has had to deal with the fallout of Pillowtex's closing and help facilitate the coming of the North Carolina Research Campus.

This interview was organized around several major themes: Mr. Misenheimer's personal and profession past; the challenges faced by Kannapolis during his city council tenure and mayorship; the difficulties imposed on Kannapolis by the Pillowtex closings; and the promise of the North Carolina Research Campus.
