Phyllis Beaver is currently the marketing director for the North Carolina Research Campus. She was formerly the marketing director for Cannon Village. She is a native of Kannapolis, who attended Mars Hill College near Asheville, North Carolina on a Cannon scholarship (named for the Cannon family who owned Cannon Mills). After graduation, she lived in Raleigh and Manhattan before returning to Kannapolis to work in residential real estate.
The major themes of this interview include: the building and promotion of the North Carolina Research Campus; the history of Kannapolis with an emphasis on the dislocations caused by the closing of the textile mills; the reputation of Castle and Cooke owner David Murdock in the community; the opportunities and difficulties presented by partnership with the state; and Beaver's own experiences as someone who has lived in Kannapolis most of her life.
