Scope and Content Note
In the summers of 1999 and 2000, the Evergreen Foundation and the Special
Collections Research Center at NCSU Libraries initiated an archive for the maintenance
of organizational records, maps, brochures, and other publications pertaining to
greenways in the United States and Canada. The formation of Greenways organizations
began in the 1980s to preserve the earth's dwindling natural resources. The need to
conserve these natural resources led many grass roots organizations, governmental
agencies, and local communities to protect the existing natural surroundings while
at the same time transform decaying urban areas into greenways and other nature trails.
The International Greenways Resource Collection was initiated in hopes of gathering
resources which would be beneficial to researchers interested in the history and creation
of greenways and other urban design movements. The Resource Collection is an ongoing project
to which additional material will be added as they are received.
Series Note
The International Greenways Resource Collection is divided into four series. The Foreign
series contains information on greenways outside of the United States. The National series
documents greenways organizations that operate across the country. The Regional series houses
information that pertains to greenways that transcend state boundaries but do not encompass a
national outlook. The States series is limited to greenways that operate only in a particular
state. Within series the folders are organized alphabetically according to organization name.
