Scope and Content
The records of the Greenways Survey collection documents a survey initiated by the Evergreen
Foundation and the Special Collections Research Center at NCSU Libraries in the summers of 1999
and 2000. The surveys were initiated to compile information about records kept by organizations
involved in various Greenways movements. The formation of Greenways movements began in
the 1980s as a result of a heightened awareness of the dwindling and misuse of the earth's
resources. The need to conserve these natural resources led many grass roots organizations,
governmental agencies, and local communities to protect the existing natural surroundings while
at the same time transform decaying urban areas into greenways and other nature trails.
The Greenways Survey was initiated in hopes of gathering resources which would be beneficial
to researchers interested in the history and creation of greenways and other urban design
movements. The Greenways Archive is an ongoing project to which additional material will be
added as it is received.
Series Note
The Greeenways Survey collection is divided into two series. Series 1 contains the returned 1999
surveys, while series 2 contains the surveys from 2000.
