Historical Note

In 1911, Dr. Carl Schenck and the Biltmore Forest School went on a grand tour to the Pacific Northwest. On this tour they observed forestry and logging operations from Duluth, Minnesota to Spokane, Washington. On their return trip, they stopped in the St. Joe National Forest in northern Idaho. Some of these photographs are likely from that 1911 visit. Dr. Carl Schenck also referred to the fine reception the school received at the Coeur d'Alene National Forest during other years. The photographs at Coeur d'Alene may be from one of these later visits.

It grew in Latah County, Idaho, near Bovill, and stood within the timber holdings of the Potlatch Lumber Company, Potlatch, Idaho. It was cut down on December 12th, 1911, when the surrounding forest was cut, and because the tree had begun to decay. Its height was 207 feet and its breast height diameter 6 feet 9 inches. It scaled 28,900 feet, board measure. Its age was 425 years which would indicate it started to grow before Columbus landed on our Continent."
