Historical Note
While serving as an agent for the Division of Forestry, Dr. Carl Schenck made several trips for Gifford Pinchot, who was the head of the United States Division of Forestry. In 1899, Dr. Schenck and the Biltmore Forestry School students traveled to Walker County, Alabama. They examined a tract of primeval longleaf pine and made a study of the species' rate of growth by counting the rings of
the cut trees. The information they gathered was to be used by Pinchot and the Division of Forestry to develop a working plan
for the tract. Dr. Schenck was never able to determine if the information was ever used.
