Historical Note

The trip from Cadillac, Michigan to Portland, Oregon was done through the transcontinental railroads. Schenck recounts that on every trip west, "we traveled in comfort, with two Pullmans and a dining car for our private use." They stopped in several places, including Duluth, Minnesota to visit the Clyde Iron Works, the Chippewa National Forest, Glacier National Park, and the Big Bend area of the Columbia River in Washington. These stops were all geared toward forestry or forest management industry and provided a wide variety of forestry issues facing the various areas of the United States.
