Historical Note

In 1895 the Biltmore Estate contained 100,000 acres of forest, plus a 250 acre wooded park and five gardens. From 1898 to 1909, these forests served as a learning laboratory for Dr. Carl Schenck's Biltmore Forestry School. In 1915, following the death of George W. Vanderbilt, his widow sold 87,000 acres to the federal government, creating the Pisgah National Forest.
