Historical Note

The Biltmore House sits on the Biltmore Estate, which originally consisted of 125,000 acres near Asheville, NC. The estate was the country home of George W. Vanderbilt, grandson of "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt. The house was designed by noted architect Richard Morris Hunt and was constructed between 1889 and 1895. The Biltmore Estate also consisted of gardens and the nearby town of Biltmore Village which provided housing, a school, a church, and a hospital for the estate's employees. Dr. Carl Schenck established the first forestry school in the United States at Bilmore Estate in 1898. The school remained on Vanderbilt's estate until 1909.
