Finding Aid for Biltmore Estate Forestry Department Manager's Records, Series D

Collection Information

Abstract:
Series D of The Biltmore Estate Forestry Department Manager's Records contains business and personal correspondence dated 1896 to 1909, predominately incoming correspondence collected and preserved by George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate Forestry Department Office. Copies of outgoing correspondence, presumably letters written by Biltmore Estate Forest Manager, Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck are included. Series D is one of the smaller series of the Collection. It contains letters from J. E. Defebaugh, Editor of "American Lumberman." There are letters from Frank A. Dillingham, Secretary of the Highland Forest Company, for which Dr. Schenck worked. Series D contains letters to Dr. Schenck from Lewis Doster, Secretary of The Hardwood Manufacturers' Association of the United States. It also contains letters from the female naturalist, Mira Lloyd Dock of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There are many letters from students at Biltmore Forest School and their parents in this series. Finally, Series D holds many letters from prospective students of Biltmore Forest School, vendors wishing to sell goods and services, lumber merchants and buyers, persons requesting Dr. Schenck's publications and landowners communicating about the sale of tracts adjoining or within the boundaries of George Vanderbilt's lands.

Scope and Content Note

Like the other series in the Biltmore Estate Forestry Department Manager's Records, Series D documents the formation of scientific forestry across the world. Series D is smaller than the other series thus far. It contains much information from J. E. Defebaugh, Editor of the highly esteemed Chicago publication, "American Lumberman." The "American Lumberman" served as a means of expression for national issues effecting the lumber industry and the field of forestry.

Series D also contains correspondence from Frank A. Dillingham, Secretary of the Highland Forest Company. His correspondence marks the formation, work and disbanding of this company, for which Dr. Schenck controlled local interests. Highland Forest Company management was based in New York City. Dr. Schenck was elected Director and worked with lands in Jackson County, North Carolina.

There are also letters from Lewis Doster, Secretary of The Hardwood Manufacturers' Association of the United States. It acted as an agent for the trade of lumber between member institutions. The Association also concerned itself with legal and ethical issues in the field of lumber manufacturing.

Finally, Series D contains letters from Mira Lloyd Dock of Harrisburg, PA. She began corresponding with Dr. Schenck to obtain information for her courses of lectures on forestry, botany and village improvement. Despite her insistence that forestry was men's work, she went on the become a member of the State Forestry Reservation Commission of the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry.

There are also many letters from students of Biltmore Forest School and their parents in Series D.

Collection Organization

Records are filed by correspondent's last name in the case of individual persons. They are filed by company's name for institutions and businesses. It also appears that some clerks preferred to file records by the names of company's managers or agents. Therefore, one organization may be represented in the filing system by several letters depending on the variety of individuals' names within that particular group. In addition, miscellaneous manuscripts are filed in folders carrying a description of the material as a title.

Collection Arrangement

The documents have been arranged alphabetically by correspondents' name, and then, chronologically by date. This organization follows the records' original provenance, in that they were first filed in alphabetical order. It appears the original filing system consisted of placing newer records to the front of older ones, thus keeping working material up-to-date.
