Snøhetta: Building Inspiration

educate and delight patrons. These have consisted of original exhibitions
featuring reproductions of materials from the library collection, as well as
exhibitions borrowed from institutions such as the NEWSEUM and the Smithsonian.

The Gallery
|
| Exhibition Gallery, March 2007 |
With the completion of the renovations in the east wing in the Spring of 2007, the Exhibition
Program at the NCSU Libraries took on a new dimension, allowing for the
display of original material that would be otherwise too sensitive to display. The new gallery features 15 museum quality cases that are specifically built
to provide optimum conditions for the safe and secure display of rare and sensitive
materials. The cases proved a microclimate that mediates the harmful effects
changes in temperature and humidity have on paper-based items. LED lighting
will eliminate harmful UV rays while providing optimum viewing conditions.
The gallery is in a central location and provides a transition between the
Special Collections Reading Room and the Library Commons in the East Wing. It
provides a social area for the discussion of ideas, as well as a
space where patrons can view interesting items and learn about the material
on display.
Spotlighting Collections
Stored on shelves, closed in boxes, or tucked away in folders, the collections
of the Special Collections Research Center are often out of sight from most library patrons. The new gallery
allows highlights of the collection to be brought out of storage and put
on display for all who walk by to see. It showcases the beautiful imagery
and design that permeates the rare books in the SCRC collection, in addition to presenting documents, photographs, and prints that can be found in many of
the manuscript and archival collections.
