<p>The completion of the <name type="corporate">North Carolina State College Reactor</name><lb/>
has enlarged both the opportunities and the responsibilities<lb/>
of the College in the fields of teaching and research. For<lb/>
this reason, the duties and functions of the <name type="corporate">College <orig reg="Radioisotope">Radio-<lb/>
isotope</orig> Committee</name> have been increased, and the committee has<lb/>
been renamed the <name type="corporate">College Committee on Safety and Health for<lb/>
the Nuclear Reactor and Radloisotopes</name>.
</p>
<p>The membership of the committee is as follows;

</p>
<p>This committee has the responsibility of protecting the<lb/>
health and guarding the safety of all personnel using <orig reg="radioactive">radio-<lb/>
active</orig> materials and other sources of hard radiation. An<lb/>
additional objective set for the committee is to further the<lb/>
expansion and development of research utilizing these materials.
</p>
<p>All proposed experimental projects using radioactive <orig reg="materials">mater-<lb/>
ials</orig> must be approved by, and will be under the surveillance<lb/>
of the <name type="corporate">Safety and Health Committee</name>. Presently existing projects<lb/>
of this sort, as well as any other activities involving the<lb/>
problem of personnel protection against radiation hazards, are<lb/>
similarly under the committee's surveillance, and the committee<lb/>
has been requested to compile and maintain a complete catalog<lb/>
of all radioactive materials and other sources of hard radiation<lb/>
on this campus. Periodic checks will be made by the committee<lb/>
or by the Radiological Safety Officer of the committee to insure<lb/>
that adequate safeguards to the health and safety of personnel<lb/>
and the public have been provided.

<p>A Radiological Safety Officer, appointed by the <orig reg="Administration">Adminis-<lb/>
tration</orig>, will function as the executive arm of the committee.<lb/>
<name type="person">Mr. David O. Lintz</name>, whose office is <name type="place">Room 227 Daniels Hall</name>, has<lb/>
been appointed to this position.
</p>
<p>As a first step in establishing procedures by means of<lb/>
which <name type="person">Mr. Lintz</name> may carry out his duties, the committee has<lb/>
prepared a "Statement of Responsibilities, Procedures, and<lb/>
Regulations Governing the use of Radioactivity on the Campus."<lb/>
A copy of this statement is enclosed herewith, and additional<lb/>
copies may be obtained from <name type="person">Mrs. Mildred Lenich</name>, <name type="place">Room 320 <orig reg="Daniels">Dan-<lb/>
iels</orig> Hall</name> (ext. 236).
</p>
<p>The <name type="corporate">Safety and Health Committee</name> has a difficult assignment,<lb/>
and only the complete cooperation of all members of the College<lb/>
staff will make it possible for them to accomplish their task.<lb/>
Please bring this matter to the attention of all members of your
staff.
