<salute>Dear <name type="person">Mr. Small</name>:
</salute></opener>
<p>I have before me a copy of a letter of <date value="1953-06-06">June 4</date> from <name type="corporate">Materials<lb/>
Handlers</name> to <name type="corporate">Wrenn Wilson Construction Company</name> regarding the Crane<lb/>
in the Nuclear Building.
</p>
<p>We have now used this crane in a variety of ways for over a<lb/>
month. There are, as pointed out in my letter of early May, a<lb/>
number of ways in which this crane fails to achieve our anticipated<lb/>
performance. Through the experience gained in its use, however, we<lb/>
believe that a satisfactory compromise revision of these mechanism can<lb/>
be reached without great burden on the manufacturers by the four<lb/>
following adjustments:
<list>
<item>1. The brake on the bridge should be changed to that specified,<lb/>
i.e. to a variable brake capable of adjustment or complete<lb/>
removal, or, if this is not possible, the brake should be <lb/>
removed entirely.</item>
<item><lb/></item>
<item>2. A positive step (not just a limit switch) should be provided<lb/>
on the beam to prevent the trolley mechanism from crashing<lb/>
against the concrete walls of the room.</item>
<item><lb/></item>
<item>The trolley mechanism should be revised so that the hoist hook<lb/>
can approach to within 39 or 40 inches of the wall,--as<lb/>
apparently originally specified. This can be achieved <orig reg="without">with-<lb/>
out</orig> change of the carrier mechanism or other major revisions,<lb/>
excepting switching the drive unit to the other side of the<lb/>
hoist.</item>
<item><lb/></item>
<item>4. In lieu of other revisions to meet specifications, some of<lb/>
which would require major changes, and since the major<lb/>
remaining limitation on the crane's use is its failure to<lb/>
approach sufficiently closely to the wall of the room to<lb/>
permit its easy use in moving objects betweenthe first<lb/>
floor rear hallway and the floor of the reactor room, a<lb/>
3-ton capacity steel "drawbridge" platform extension of the<lb/>
rear hallway floor, 40 inches into the reactor room, will<lb/>
be accepted. The general plan for this platform I have<lb/>
discussed with you on previous occasions.</item>
