<salute>Dear <name type="person">Mr. Harden</name>:</salute>

<p><name type="person">Mr. W. D. Carmichael, Jr.</name> vice-president and controller of the <name type="corporate">University <lb/>
of North Carolina</name>, has suggested that you be sent a progress report as to <lb/>
the construction of the <name type="place">Nuclear Reactor Building</name> and the Nuclear Reactor. <lb/>
The accompanying brochure has been prepared at my request by <name type="person">Dr. Clifford <lb/>
Beck</name> and has two very interesting photographs in addtion to a pertinent <lb/>
account of the progress made in this essential instructional and research <lb/>
development here in our <name type="corporate">Engineering School</name>.</p>

<p>The rising cost of construction has made drastic changes in the cost of <lb/>
this project. The cost of the Reactor (now estimated at $150,000) is being <lb/>
paid with State and College funds. The <name type="place">Reactor Building</name>, which was made <lb/>
possible through the generous gift of $200,000 from the <name type="corporate">Burlington Mills <lb/>
Foundation</name>, was originally to cost $300,000. The bids as received were so <lb/>
high that it was necessary to reduce the number of laboratories and other <lb/>
essential facilities in the building. We then went ahead with the awarding <lb/>
of the contract at a value of $380,000. The building is being so constructed <lb/>
that some time, and we hope in the near future, the rest of the laboratories <lb/>
can be completed within the building when funds are available.</p>

<p>We here at <name type="corporate">North Carolina State College</name>, and especially the group in science <lb/>
and engineering, again express to you, the officers, and the Board of Directors <lb/>
of <name type="corporate">Burlington Mills</name> our sincere appreciation of your generous gift and en-<lb/>
couragement in providing these facilities in the field of nuclear instruc-<lb/>
tion and research. It is a contribution which will aid us all as we face <lb/>
the problems of tomorrow.</p>
