<p>This memo to Dean Lampe discusses possible building sites for the reactor. It states a preference for a space south of the Zoology building.</p>

<p>On Saturday, <date value="1950-08-12">August 12, 1950</date>, from 10 to 12 A.M., a conference of<lb/>
the above named individuals numbered 1 through 7 was held in <name type="person">Chancellor<lb/>
Harrelson</name>'s office for the purpose of reconsidering the location of the State<lb/>
College Nuclear Reactor. Only three sites were considered:</p>

<list><item>1. The space immediately west of Polk Hall and north of the Bureau<lb/>
of Mines.</item>

<item>2. The space south of the present Zoology Building, north of the<lb/>
railroad tracks.</item>

<item>3. The space north of Zoology Building in the southern portion of<lb/>
the Court of Ceres.</item>
</list>
<p>It was the unanimous opinion that the space now occupied by Zoology<lb/>
constituted the ideal location, but the practical problem involved in removing<lb/>
Zoology in less than three years, and probably five, was conceded to be impossible<lb/>
of solution.</p>

<p><name type="person">Mr. Smith</name> advocated most strongly that the reactor be located behind<lb/>
Zoology, and so arranged that the facility could be expanded into the Zoology<lb/>
Building space when that building could be removed.
</p>
<p><name type="person">Dr. Beck</name> maintained that there is serious doubt that the reactor can<lb/>
be crowded into the space behind Zoology for interim operation, and felt further<lb/>
that a structure of interim design would not be suitable after removal of Zoology,<lb/>
without extensive and expensive alteration. It was also pointed out that funds<lb/>
for the reactor might not be donated from sources not in prospect if the building<lb/>
were crowded into an insignificant initial location.</p>

<pb n="2"/>
<p><seg><xref id="DONRsites081550b.jpg" rend="new">
<figure entity="DONRsites081550b"></figure></xref></seg>
</p>
<p>It was the firm opinion of <name type="person">Mr. Smith</name> and the Agricultural School<lb/>
representatives that the Court of Ceres location if definitely preferable<lb/>
to the site west of Polk Hall. The idea hear was, that the Reactor Building<lb/>
should face south on University Drive, and the reactor facility should be<lb/>
designed as a part of a three or four story east-west laboratory structure<lb/>
extending across the Court of Ceres in line with the north ends of Polk and <lb/>
Daniels. The laboratory structure adjacent to and a part of the reactor<lb/>
facility would be used for additional reactor laboratories if required for<lb/>
Physics Department space when Daniels Hall became too crowded. <name type="person">Mr. Smith</name>,<lb/>
particularly, and the entire group to a large extent, felt that this <orig reg="location">loca-<lb/>
tion</orig> would destroy the architectural plan of this part of the campus and<lb/>
should be avoided if possible.
</p>
<p>It was decided finally that:</p>

<list><item>1. The reactor should be located, if possible, in the space south<lb/>
of old Zoology.</item>

<item>2. A concerted effort would be made to convince the legislature<lb/>
that old Zoology should be removed and space be provided <orig reg="elsewhere">else-<lb/>
where</orig> for Bacteriology.</item>
</list>
<p>It was further decided that (1) if the <name type="corporate">Commission</name> would not approve the<lb/>
reactor location for an interim period of operation in the crowded space behind<lb/>
Zoology, or (2) if a suitable interim design could not be drawn up for a <orig reg="long-range">long-<lb/>
range</orig> acceptable reactor structure, then the reactor should be located in the <lb/>
souther portion of the Court of Ceres. Should this in turn not be acceptable<lb/>
to the Commission, another meeting would be called by <name type="person">Chancellor Harrelson</name><lb/>
for consideration of other sites.</p>
