Re: Location for Nuclear Reactor Building</opener>

<salute>Dear <name type="person">Chancellor Harrelson</name>:</salute>

<p>For some week we have attempted to determine the most<lb/>
suitable location on the State College Campus for the proposed<lb/>
Nuclear Reactor Building. We have studied all possible <orig reg="locations">loca-<lb/>
tions</orig>, in the light of various factors involved in the choice,<lb/>
and have obtained the advice of many of those who, in one way<lb/>
or another, would be concerned with this decision.</p>

<p>Yesterday, in a lengthy discussion in <name type="person">Dean Lampe</name>'s office,<lb/>
<name type="person">Dr. D. B. Anderson</name>, <name type="person">Dr. J. H. Jensen</name>, <name type="person">Mr. J. G. Vann</name>, <name type="person">Dean Lampe</name><lb/>
and I attempted to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of<lb/>
the various proposed sites, and every possible site does have both<lb/>
advantages and disadvantages. Having made this summarization, it<lb/>
was the unanimous opinion of all of those present that the best<lb/>
choice of site now available is that west of Polk Hall, north of <lb/>
the Bureau of Mines, in the space now allocated to a proposed<lb/>
infirmary. To list the factors in favor of this choice would<lb/>
extend this note unduly, and probably is not needed at this<lb/>
point. I can do so, however, if you wish. The group named<lb/>
above feels quite strongly that this is the best location <orig reg="available">avail-<lb/>
able</orig>.</p>

<p>There is some urgency in the matter of having an official<lb/>
approval and allocation of space for the Reactor Building. Final<lb/>
approval of our plans by the <name type="corporate"><abbr expan="Atomic Energy Commission">A.E.C.</abbr></name> is contingent on the choice<lb/>
of location and inclusion of a suitable description of the site<lb/>
in the feasibility report not nearing completion. We hope to <lb/>
submit this report not later than August 15. If, therefore,<lb/>
you could give us approval of the tentative infirmary site for<lb/>
the location of the Reactor Building, it would remove the last</p>
