In the Luna image database, after opening an image, the user will also see a set of tools designed to allow the user to manipulate the image view and to see descriptive information about the image.
Media information. This information is displayed down the left side of the screen and provides the item's description, including its creator, title, subjects, date, and copyright information. The user can fully expand or hide this information by clicking the appropriate button at the top right of the media information tab.
Zooming. The zoom bar appears at the bottom of the image, and by clicking the "+" or "-" symbol, or by using the mouse's scroll wheel, the user can zoom in or out on the image.
Maximize the image to the workspace. By selecting this option, located on the top right of the image workspace, the user can enlarge the image to fit the screen.
Show/hide thumbnail navigator. Also located on the top right of the image workspace, this function allows the user to pan across portions of a zoomed image. This can be done either by dragging the cursor across the image or by dragging the gray portion of the thumbnail image.
Images can be located by doing a basic keyword search across all fields.
Start by typing a name or term in the "Search Luna" box in the upper right corner of the screen. Select "Search." All relevant images will be displayed.
The basic search function supports the use of AND, OR, NOT, and quotation marks ("") to help narrow the search.
The advanced search feature is located just below the basic search box in the upper right corner of the screen. Once this option is selected, the advanced search screen will open in a new window.
Step 1. To begin, select a data field from the drop-down menu on the left. Any data field may be searched from this screen.
Step 2. Choose either "Equals," "Starts With," or "Similar To."
Step 3. In the search box, enter a letter, word, or phrase. A list of matching terms will be displayed, and, as you continue to type, the resulting list will narrow.
Step 4. Select the desired term from the list.
Step 5. To add an additional field to the search, select the "+" symbol below the search box. Repeat the process for steps 1-4. You can continue to select additional fields to further narrow your search.
This search also supports the use of the AND and OR operators. The default setting is "AND," but by clicking the AND button to the left of the field selection box, it will toggle to "OR."
Step 6. When you are finished adding search criteria, select "Search" in the upper right corner of the window. All relevant images will be displayed.
Once a search has been performed, results can be narrowed by using the facets under the "Narrow Search" tab on the left side of the screen. By selecting a term displayed under the "What," "Where," or "When" category from this tab, search results can be refined.
For example, if the user performs a basic search for "Farmhouses" and wishes to refine the results to display only farmhouses built in 1790, the user can select "1790" from the "When" category. The database would then return only images of farmhouses built in 1790, not images of all structures in the database dating from 1790.
Once selected, facets can also be removed by clicking on the "Remove" function located at the top of the tab.
