SearchAssist

Enhance your research with convenient, personalized, expert database searching by NCSU Libraries subject specialists ...

SearchAssist is a literature search service designed to support university research; it is available to NC State faculty, graduate students, undergraduates engaged in research grants and projects, research staff, and university administration. SearchAssist enhances the research process with convenient, personalized, expert database searching by subject specialist librarians. For reference assistance related to course assignments and other educational work, undergraduate students are encouraged to consult librarians at the D.H. Hill Library Reference Desk or at any of the four branch libraries, in person, by telephone, e-mail, or live "chat" through the Ask a Librarian service.

When a search request is made, library subject specialists select and search relevant electronic databases and return results to the requestor in a timely fashion. In addition, SearchAssist allows users to receive regular updates on research topics. If a topic or question requires the use of specific information that is not in electronic form, librarians will advise and assist in locating those materials as well.

SearchAssist Features:

  • SearchAssist is available to NC State faculty, graduate students, undergraduates engaged in research grants and projects, research staff, and university administration.
  • Search requests can be submitted in person or via a Web form.
  • You will receive a response within two working days of the date of the request.
  • Some searches may require the use of "fee-based" databases to which the library does not subscribe, and in some cases, a cost recovery fee is charged. Costs exceeding $100 per researcher per semester can be paid by interdepartmental transfer, check, or money order. Every attempt is made to minimize costs.
  • Search results include citations and abstracts (where available), usually not full-text documents. Copies of materials available in the library collection can be requested through Campus Book Delivery or Document Delivery. Material not available in the NCSU Libraries may be obtained from Interlibrary Loan. All interlibrary and document delivery services are accessible through Tripsaver.
  • Receive search results in your preferred format: electronically (e-mail) or on paper (campus mail or pick up).
  • Search results from most databases can be imported into EndNote or RefWorks citation management software.
  • Searches will be performed by library subject specialists.
  • Library subject specialists are also available to set up current awareness profiles or "alerts" for regular updates of the literature.
  • Confidentiality of search requests: see the NCSU Libraries' Confidentiality of User Records Policy.
