What
What Is A License?
For our purposes, a license is a contract/agreement between
at least two legal entities that accomplishes a grant of rights by one
entity to another. It is not a transfer of ownership rights. A valid
license must contain an offer, an acceptance, mutuality, consideration
(exchange of something of value), and enforceability. If it contains
these elements, a license is legally enforceable and governed by the
law of contracts.
The Licenses
Most, if not all, of the electronic databases and e-journals
available through the NCSU Libraries are governed by their own individual
license agreements. Additionally, many cd-rom and computer software
products are acquired through licensing.
In general, the licenses for the NCSU Libraries' materials
are for access to or use of intellectual property.
