Hardware and Software for E-Reserves

Students who wish to use Electronic Reserves will need access to the following hardware and software.

For viewing PDF documents:

  • A World Wide Web browser with graphics capabilities. Netscape and Internet Explorer are available in the Libraries public areas and Unity/EOS labs. Please Note: At this time, the AOL Web Browser will not work with the Electronic Reserve system.
  • Download Adobe Acrobat Reader This software is available in the Libraries public areas, Unity/EOS labs, and most other computer labs on campus. For students accessing Electronic Reserves from ResNet or off-campus, Acrobat Reader is free software available for download at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html.
  • An Adobe Acrobat compatible computer. System requirements for Adobe Acrobat are located at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readersysreq.html
  • A Unity/EOS account is required for off-campus access. Your Unity/EOS login and password will be used to authenticate your NCSU affiliation. More information on Unity/EOS accounts is located at http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cc/pub/unity.html

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PRINTING:

  • Printing .pdf files (the format used by Electronic Reserves) can be a slow process, especially when accessing files over a modem. When you print .pdf files, we recommend reducing the printer resolution to 150 dpi on the pop-up Printer menu (if this option is available to you). This will speed the printing process and still yield legible articles.
  • To print an Electronic Reserves document, be sure to click on the "printer" icon at the immediate upper left of the page being displayed (within Adobe Acrobat Reader), NOT the "Print" icon in the browser's toolbar.
  • Having trouble printing an Acrobat file? Pages printing as "mirror images?" Some pages not printing at all? Try checking the "Print as image" option in the print dialog box. This often solves many such problems.

For listening to music files:

  • RealPlayer software. Music files are provided only in RealAudio format. In order to hear the music, users must have player software on their workstations. The music has been encoded for a variety of streaming rates, and the server will automatically detect and provide the appropriate stream for the bandwidth you are using.
  • Free RealOne Player software is available for download at http://www.real.com/realoneplayer.html?src=sysreqs,020619r1choice_c1
  • A compatible computer. System requirements for RealOne Player are located at http://www.real.com/realone/sysreqs.html. If your workstation does not meet the system requirements, previous player versions are available at http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?src=020327r1choice_c1,sysreqs . RealPlayer 8 Basic, RealPlayer 7 Basic, and RealPlayer G2 will also play the music files.
  • Users listening to the music files in campus labs will need to provide their own headphones. In D.H. Hill Library users may purchase headphones from a vending machine located in the photocopy services room.
  • A Unity/EOS account is required for off-campus access. Your Unity/EOS login and password will be used to authenticate your NCSU affiliation. More information on Unity/EOS accounts is located at http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/cc/pub/unity.html
