Fact Sheet
Summary
Completed in early 2007, the renovation of the D. H. Hill Library's East Wing allowed the Libraries to create the Learning Commons as well as a new Special Collections Research Center including a well-appointed reading room, a state-of-the-art exhibit gallery, and a conservatory. In addition, the building's electrical and HVAC infrastructure was upgraded, and new windows were installed on all four floors. [Overview of the renovation and the completed spaces.]
The East Wing renovation constituted Phase II of the Library Master Plan, which also envisions a new library on NC State's Centennial Campus, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library.
In addition to addressing public space needs, the renovation reconfigured office space for technical services staff on the ground floor to allow more effective processing of library materials. The Metadata and Cataloging Department moved down from the first floor to join the other units involved in acquiring, organizing, and preserving materials. During the course of the renovation, more than 50 library staff members from these departments moved to a swing-space building located at 516 Brickhaven Drive, approximately two miles from campus.
