Porter, 'WWWorld', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v23n09 (April 1996) URL = ftp://ftp.lib.ncsu.edu/pub/stacks/ncln/ncln-v23n09-porter-wwworld _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 23 no. 9 April 1996 Porter, George "WWWorld" The Victorian Women Writers Project (VWWP) produces highly accurate, SGML-encoded transcriptions of literary works by British women writers of the late-Victorian period. The works chosen for this project are not available elsewhere in SGML-encoded form [such as the Chadwyck Healey English Poetry Full-Text Database, which is available at the NCSU Libraries; inquire at the Reference desk for assistance]. The works include anthologies, broadsides, and volumes of poetry and verse drama. Considerable attention is given to the accuracy and completeness of the texts and to accurate bibliographical descriptions of them. Texts are encoded according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines, using TEILite.DTD (version 1.6). The VWWP includes with each text a header describing fully the source text, the editorial decisions, and the resulting computer file. The texts are freely available through the World Wide Web in both HTML and SGML formats. Panorama is required for viewing SGML files through a web browser. A faculty advisory board considers textual and editorial issues, while a technical advisory panel considers issues of encoding and distribution. http://www.indiana.edu/~letrs/vwwp/ VizieR, the CDS/ESRIN service for astronomical catalogs is the result of a joint effort of CDS (Centre de Donn=E9es Astronomiques de Strasbourg) and ESA-ESRIN (European Space Agency Information Systems Division) to provide the astronomical community with a dedicated tool for retrieving data listed in published catalogs and tables. http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/ The CDS collects and distributes astronomical data catalogs, generally related to observations of stars and galaxies: 1,509 catalogs are archived at CDS (Astronomer's Bazaar) http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Cats.html of which 1,026 are documented and available online (as ASCII or FITS files) and 847 are also available through the VizieR system. Frames facilitate the concurrent presentation of table-of- contents or directory information parallel to a site's information content. Frames are only viewable with Netscape 2.0 (or later). The HTML coding for frames separates the intellectual content and the navigational information into linked files. When browsers that do not support frames access a web page with frames, only the basic content is transmitted. The following two sites illustrate the potential of this extension. _Godey's Lady's Book Online_ reproduces several issues of a popular nineteenth-century literary magazine. It is a joint effort of the University of Rochester's Department of History and the Electronic History Project. Each frame can be independently resized and scrolled. http://www.history.rochester.edu/godeys/ Natural Disaster Reference Database attempts to assemble and make available a bibliographic database on research, programs, and results that relate to the use of satellite remote sensing for disaster mitigation. The site has shown significant evolution in its use of frames, server push animation, and other nifty HTML tricks. The content level has grown considerably in the last two months as well. http://ltpwww.gsfc.nasa.gov/ndrd/fndrd.html
