Currently, the extended loan period has been available only to faculty, doctoral students, and individuals who have been approved for "Research Loan" privileges. During the trial period, all master's level students will automatically be authorized by the library's circulation system for ninety- day loans and will not need to request research loan privileges. The staff in the Access Services Department will gather data during the spring and summer in order to assess the impact of extended loans on availability of materials. In addition, they will increase efforts to alert all users to the availability of services such as holds, recalls, and book searches for missing items. This trial is one among several changes introduced this academic year aimed at increasing responsiveness on library services for library users. In July the Access Services Department implemented a self-check workstation in the D. H. Hill Library that enables users to check out most of the circulating materials on their own and avoid lines at circulation desks. During the fall semester they also introduced two new services for re-newing library materials- -a telephone renewal module connected to the online information system (reachable at ext. 5-6065) and an e-mail renewal request option--reachable at: Library_Circulation@ncsu.edu
