"Copyright, Publishing, & the Future of the Academy" In January 16, 1996, Kenneth D. Crews, associate professor at the Indiana University School of Law, will offer four sessions on copyright issues, open to the NC State campus community. His visit is sponsored by the Scholarly Communication Subcommittee of the University Library Committee. Crews, who is also director of the Copyright Management Center at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, is the author of _Copyright, Fair Use, and the Challenge for Universities: Promoting the Progress of Higher Education_ (University of Chicago Press, 1993). The meetings, to be held in the Erdahl-Cloyd Theatre, D. H. Hill Library, will cover: 8:00 a.m. break 8:30-10:00 a.m. Session 1: Copyright, higher education, and libraries. A general session also covering library copying under section 108, photocopies on reserve, and course packs. All those interested in the later sessions are encouraged to attend this one to gain a frame of reference. 10:00 a.m. break 10:30 a.m.-12:00 noon Session 2: Multimedia. Covers use of multimedia in instruction and research--images, art, photographs. Includes status report on Multimedia Fair Use Guidelines and practical examples of what is and is not fair use in real-life academic situations. 2:00=D03:00 p.m. Session 3: White Paper on the National and Global Information Infrastructure. Background of report, its potential impacts, what we can do. 3:00 p.m. break 3:30=D05:00 p.m. Session 4: Scholarly Publishing, Contracts and Copyright Notices.
