Abbott, 'Recent Additions to the Collections', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v22n04 (November 1994) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 22 no. 4 November 1994 Abbott, John "Recent Additions to the Collections" This column and succeeding ones will be used to announce recent additions of significant print, digital, and media materials to collections of the NCSU Libraries. The current fiscal environment remains based on the state-appropriated budget for fiscal year 1987-1988, supplemented by one-time appropriations of additional funds. Consequently, the NCSU Libraries' purchasing power for subscription-based publications is still tightly constrained and commitments to purchase new journals are not possible. This column will present a sampling of important new information materials acquired within these budgetary constraints. New Information Materials _AIDS Research Archives: Observations on Social and Political Change 1980-1990_ Drawn from the research collections of the New York Public Library, this is a microfiche collection of 3,000 articles and reports from nonmainstream sources documenting social and political events, findings, and opinions during the first ten years of the AIDS crisis. An index and a research guide are available, classifying the materials within 160 subject categories. The collection and accompanying guides are housed in the Microforms Reading Room. (Jerry Alper, Inc., Publishers) _Historic American Engineering Record_ A documentation of the development of American technology, industry, and engineering in 24,000 photographs and 20,000 pages of accompanying text. The _HAER_ examines the original measured drawings and photographs, as well as historical reports and technical analyses of 1,827 structures throughout the U.S. Sites include railways, arsenals, breweries, dams, mills, pumping stations, missile ranges, mines, and dams. The project was jointly funded by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the U.S. Department of Interior, and the Library of Congress. The contents are arranged geographically. The set is housed in the Microforms Reading Room. (Chadwyck-Healy, Inc.) _Building Construction Cost Data, 1943-1987_ These R. S. Means publications contain construction industry cost data issued from 1943 through 1987. The data increases in detail across the period and covers mechanical, electrical, site work, repair, and labor costs. In the 1960s, the "City Cost Index" was added to weigh costs by geographic region. This is a collection of 500 fiche that is housed in the Microforms Reading Room. (Clearwater Publishing Co.)
