Last year, the Association of Research Libraries and the 
Association of American University Presses cosponsored their 
third symposium on scholarly publishing on the electronic 
networks.  Entitled _Gateways, Gatekeepers, and Roles in the 
Information Omniverse_, the proceedings include presentations 
ranging "from sweeping views of the tantalizing and enduring 
concept of the Virtual Library through the centuries--the 
library that is simultaneously everywhere and nowhere--all 
the way to very pragmatic discussions about what it takes to 
make electronic text that can be used in the current network 
environment."  Cost recovery and intellectual property laws in 
the evolving technological environment are also addressed.
