"Introducing REVEAL: Current Awareness from UnCover"


Previous issues of the Libraries' _Newsletter_ have discussed 
UnCover, one of the world's largest journal article indexes, 
available via the NCSU Libraries' Information System.  Users 
can search UnCover's database of more than 17,000 journal 
tables of contents--covering all disciplines--and, for a fee, 
have copies of articles delivered to their fax machines.  Now 
the developers at CARL Corporation have launched a new 
service: REVEAL.

REVEAL is a free table-of-contents alert service available via 
e-mail.  Viewers can set up profiles or lists of any of the 
journals in the UnCover database for which they want to see 
the tables of contents.  When the next issue of any of the titles 
chosen is entered into the UnCover database, the table of 
contents for the issue is automatically e-mailed to the profile 
holder.  Ordering a copy of one of the articles is as easy as 
replying to an e-mail message.  Articles ordered by reply e-
mail will be delivered by fax for a service charge of $8.50 plus 
a copyright fee.

Setting Up a Profile

>From the NCSU Libraries' Information System main menu, 
choose OPTION 2 (Journal Article Indexes) and then select 
OPTION 1 for UnCover.

You will be asked to identify your terminal type (in most 
cases, OPTION 5, VT100).  Then select OPTION 1 (Article 
Access and Delivery).

You will be prompted to enter a user profile if you have one--
press <RETURN> for the next screen.  At this point you can 
create your user profile by typing "NEW."  You will be asked for 
some basic information about yourself but can omit any fields 
that you prefer not to enter.  For REVEAL to work, however, you 
MUST include your e-mail address.  Be sure to write down your 
User Profile number and to remember your password for future 
access.

Browse <B> the database by journal title.  Once you have 
selected a journal title of interest, type REVEAL to add the 
title to your profile.  The system will confirm that you are set 
up to receive current table-of-contents information on the 
title via e-mail.  Users can select up to 100 titles and may 
change their profiles at any time to add or delete titles.  They 
can also examine current issue information by selecting <E> 
and typing in the line number of the issue that interests them.  
Users also can select the article line number to view full 
citation information.
