McGeachy, 'NCSU Libraries Information System Update: Documents in the New Information System', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v21n05 (December 1993) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 21 no. 5 December 1993 McGeachy, Jack "NCSU Libraries Information System Update: Documents in the New Information System" Federal documents in the NCSU Libraries are now much more accessible to patrons. The library's new information system includes a separate database of U.S. government publications issued after 1975, which is updated monthly by a tape load to existing records in the Libraries' Digital Equipment computer. To access this database after logging into the new system, from the main menu screen select #1, LIBRARY CATALOGS. At the Library Catalogs screen, choose #1, NCSU'S CATALOG. Then, at the main search menu screen prompt, type D4 to enter the government documents database. This database is searched with the same software, in the same manner, as is the Libraries' online catalog. Keyword and Boolean searches of the documents database are also available. A wealth of current, useful information is available to the public in documents. Recent additions to the collection include the North American Free Trade Agreement, a report on _Adult Literacy and the New Technologies: Tools for a Lifetime_, and the first report of Vice President Gore's National Performance Review, _From Red Tape to Results_. Population and housing data from the 1990 census continues to arrive in both paper and electronic form. The government documents database is an electronic version of the comprehensive, printed _Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications_ bibliography, so it will contain records for some titles not available in the NCSU Libraries. Our collection, however, will contain a very large percentage of the titles found in this resource now available to all the Libraries' patrons. This library's holdings symbol, "NCSU," has been added to the technical record display of titles available here. To view this display, type M at the >> prompt when viewing a record in the government documents database, and look in the 049 field for "NCSU." If "NCSU" is present, the item should be in the D. H. Hill Library's Documents Department. The public shelflist in the Documents Department shows both the shelf location of the library's holdings and whether they are in paper or microfiche.
