A comprehensive, next-generation library information system that replaces the BIS online catalog. It offers more powerful ways of searching the online catalog, new online sources of information, and greater access to information by users working in their offices or homes. The system is being jointly implemented by the libraries at NCSU, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. WHAT'S IN IT? Access to: *the NCSU Libraries' online catalog, including: descriptions of books and journals in the NCSU collections where they are located at NCSU whether they are checked out or available for use *other databases searchable through the library's computer, including: UnCover database of tables-of-contents from more than 13,000 journals database of federal government documents *gateways to other information services, including: online catalogs of the libraries at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke the Gopher at the NCSU Libraries Happenings! campus-wide information system AN EVOLVING SYSTEM. Further enhancements to be added: The library staff is committed to bringing to users the most powerful information services that evolve over the next few years. The information system will continue to expand as further enhancements are added: *keyword searching allowing terms to be combined in a more flexible manner *an acquisitions and serials control system that will allow you to see what items are on order for the Libraries and where they are in the acquisitions process *in the future, access to bibliographic, textual, and numeric databases (many of which now require searching on CD-ROM or from a fee-based, commercial online service) Information handouts and instruction will be provided as the system becomes available to the public. Watch for updated information in this newsletter and on signs in the NCSU Libraries.
