Abbott, 'Geographic Information System Training Session', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v20n08 (April 1993) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 20 no. 8 April 1993 Abbott, Lisa "Geographic Information System Training Session" Do you know what a Geographic Information System (GIS) is? Are you aware that researchers on campus, in the local community, and nationally are using GIS for a variety of applications including urban and disaster planning, managing natural resources, and education? During the 1992-1993 academic year, the NCSU Libraries is participating in the "GIS Literacy Project," cosponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI). ESRI has donated to participating libraries copies of ArcView, their desktop computing software application, and of the prepackaged databases ArcUSA and ArcWorld. While ArcView does not provide the full functionality of a GIS, it does provide the capabilities of querying, visualizing, and displaying data whether it is on a computer or on a network. To learn more about GIS and specifically how to use the ArcView software, please plan to attend an ArcView training session. Reservations are required. To register for one of the two remaining sessions listed below, please call Sharon Webster, Reference Department, ext. 5-2936. All sessions will be held in the Information Technologies Teaching Center (ITTC) on the East Wing's second floor in the D. H. Hill Library. April 20, 1993 2:00-4:00 p.m. April 22, 1993 9:00-11:00 a.m. If you have questions about the GIS Literacy Project or about the ArcView training sessions, please call Lisa T. Abbott, Reference Department at ext. 5-2936 or send an e-mail to: Lisa_Abbott@ncsu.edu
