Fuller, 'History Department's Grant Benefits NCSU Libraries', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v20n06 (February 1993) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 20 no. 6 February 1993 Fuller, Linda "History Department's Grant Benefits NCSU Libraries" Linda McMurray, a professor in the NCSU Department of History, was successful in obtaining an instructional- computing grant that will directly benefit the library. The grant's three objectives were: 1) to integrate new forms of visual evidence in twentieth-century history courses, 2) to permit students to develop their own multimedia projects, and 3) to encourage history faculty to develop custom multimedia presentation for their courses. The NCSU Libraries had the computer, CD-ROM player, laser disc player, videotape hardware, and interactive software necessary to create multimedia presentations integrating historical materials from videos, computer animation, CD- ROMs, and other media into history courses. However, the library did not own the type of projector required to permit an entire class to view the presentations. Therefore, the grant sought funds to purchase a Promima Ovation liquid crystal display (LCD) projection panel to enable entire classes to view the presentations. The projector, to be housed in the D. H. Hill Library's Media Center, will be made available to all university faculty. Because the cost of the equipment proved greater than the grant awarded to the Department of History, James Anderson (dean, Division of Undergraduate Studies), Bill Toole (dean, CHASS), and Susan Nutter (director, NCSU Libraries) supplied matching funds. NCSU students will see the benefits of this cooperative venture during the spring 1993 semester.
