Porter, 'Government Printing Office/Library Program Service Budget Crisis', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v20n05 (January 1993) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 20 no. 5 January 1993 Porter, Jean "Government Printing Office/Library Program Service Budget Crisis" In late November depository libraries across the country were informed that the Library Programs Service had a budget shortfall of $3.5 million. Although there will be some staff reductions and other internal adjustments to cover this shortfall, the majority of the reductions will be in the distribution of government information. The reductions include: Distributing Department of Energy microfiche, NASA microfiche, and bound treaties only to regional depositories (e.g., UNC-Chapel Hill for N.C.). Traditionally, NCSU has collected these materials, not UNC-Chapel Hill. Distributing the _U.S. Reports_, _Official Gazette_ (patents and trademarks), army _Technical Manuals_, House and Senate _Calendars_, slip treaties, and slip Supreme Court opinions in microfiche only. Limiting claims fulfillment (issues missing from shipments) for microfiche to regional depositories only and paper copies to core publications. Distributing the bound _U.S. Congressional Serial Set_ to regional depositories. Materials published in the _Serial Set_ are the House and Senate Documents and Reports. Under this plan we will continue to receive the individual publications in microfiche but not a complete set in paper. In addition each library was asked to re-examine its selections of materials available for distribution in either paper or microfiche. Materials included in this category were congressional hearings and committee prints, the daily _Congressional Record_, the _Monthly Catalog_, and the _Code of Federal Regulations_. We have changed a few more congressional hearings to microfiche, but the other titles mentioned above will continue to be received in paper format.
