Porter, 'CIS U.S. Executive Branch Documents, 1789-1909', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v20n05 (January 1993) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 20 no. 5 January 1993 Porter, Jean "CIS U.S. Executive Branch Documents, 1789-1909" The NCSU Libraries' Documents Department now has available on microfiche the documents included in part 3 of the _CIS U.S. Executive Branch Documents, 1789-1909_. This segment of the six-part collection includes the publications of the Departments of Interior, Justice, and Labor, plus those of the Interstate Commerce Commission and the Library of Congress. The full collection was purchased jointly with the libraries at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke. Parts 1 and 2--covering the Treasury Department, the Commerce and Labor Department, and the War Department--are housed at Duke. Parts 3 and 4 will reside at NCSU. Part 4, which will be released later this year, covers a variety of agencies, most notably the Agriculture Department, Civil Service and Fish commissions, and the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company. Parts 5 and 6, which include publications of the Navy Department, the State Department, the president of the U.S., and the Smithsonian Institution, will be issued in 1994-95 and be housed at UNC- Chapel Hill. The collection is a rich one. For instance, the Interior Department, established in 1849, included the General Land Office, the Patent Office, the Census Office, the Education Bureau, the Pension Bureau, and the Indian Affairs Office. Documents in this section contain information about the government's relationship with Native Americans, mineral rights, agriculture, commerce, and navigation through census materials, documents on homesteading, patent issuance, law enforcement at the federal level, social economics, and much more. The entire collection is being thoroughly indexed by the publisher. The library now has the indexes to parts 1 through 3. Call the Documents Department at 5-3280 for further information.
