Gilreath, 'Progress in Handicapped Access', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v20n02 (September 1992) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 20 no. 2 September 1992 Gilreath, Charles L. "Progress in Handicapped Access" As a result of physical modifications in the new addition and recent purchases of equipment, access to library facilities, collections, and services by handicapped users have improved. Construction of a curtain wall on the Brickyard level of the new addition to the D. H. Hill Library has allowed the handicapped-accessible door at that level to be made into a general entrance to the building. Formerly, handicapped users had to be issued a key to operate the bypass lock on that door. Now any user can enter from the Brickyard level on the western side of the building (nearest the Atrium) and use either the interior stairway or the elevator to reach the main entrance level of the building. The Libraries has also purchased two devices to assist users with vision and hearing impairments to gain access to our collections and services. A new screen magnifier has been installed on the BIS terminal at the workstation designated for use by the handicapped. The device uses a Fresnel lens to provide virtually distortion-free enlargement of BIS screen displays. To improve services to hearing-impaired users, the Libraries has also purchased a new TDD device that enables staff at the reference desk to respond to telephone requests from deaf users. The device transmits and receives typed information over telephone lines, using an LCD display. The telephone number for reaching the Reference Department using a TDD device is the same as for voice communications, (919) 515-2935.
