Gilreath, 'Q&A', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v19n06 (April 1992) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 19 no. 6 April 1992 Gilreath, Charles L.03 "Q&A about UnCover" What Is UnCover? UnCover is a table-of-contents database and document expediting service from CARL, Inc., the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries. It is made available to faculty and students of NCSU, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University through the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN). UnCover users can search over two million citations to articles appearing in more than 10,500 journals. Some 3,000 citations from current journals are added to the database nightly. The vast majority of these journals are readily available in at least one of the TRLN libraries. For those desiring it, CARL, Inc. also provides online ordering of articles cited in the database through UnCover2. How Do I Connect to UnCover? Those with Internet connectivity can Telnet directly to the service. Those without direct Internet capabilities must connect through a campus dataswitch. The Internet address plus the local telephone numbers and connection protocols for your campus are provided at the end of this brochure. Once you have established a communications link with the TRLN gateway, type UNCOVER and then respond to the on-screen instructions. How Do I Search UnCover? Articles can be searched by either author name (N) or keyword (W). The contents of specific issues of journals can be displayed by conducting a search of the journal title (y), and you can also Browse (B) journal titles alphabetically. UnCover will prompt you through a search by any of these keys, or you can bypass system prompts by using the Quick Search technique of typing two slashes (//) followed first by the letter code for the type of search you wish to conduct and then by the search term(s). All terms entered in a search statement must be present in order for an item to be retrieved (i.e., the boolean "and" is implied in multiterm search statements). Here are a few examples of valid searches and their results: By NAME: (Searches the names of authors; thus a NAME search on George Bush will produce articles by him. To find articles about him, search by WORD.) //N Nicholas Hoffman 1 Hoffman, Nicholas von (The Spectator. 01/19/91) Going up in smoke. You can obtain copies of the vast majority of articles in the database for yourself by visiting one of the TRLN libraries. UnCover2 gives you the option of placing an order online for any article in the database and having it faxed directly to you. UnCover2 charges a $6.50 service fee plus whatever copyright royalty fee is required by the journal publisher, typically about $3.00. The exact cost for any item can be determined by using the Delivery Information (D) command. Costs may be charged to your Visa or MasterCard account. TRLN Gateway Service to UnCover at NCSU Temporary Access instructions: For the present, the service is available to users who have Telnet capabilities. The address for the service is TRLN.LIB.UNC.EDU. The machine running the gateway software is currently resident at UNC-Chapel Hill, but within the next several weeks the equipment running the software will be moved to this campus. At that time the Telnet address will change to UNCOVER.LIB.NCSU.EDU. We are working as quickly as possible to provide access through the dataswitch as well. If you have questions regarding the UnCover service, please call the Reference Department at ext. 5-2935.
